IMPORTANT UPDATE - GARDA VETTING AND REGISTRATION OF NEWLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS, SUMMER 2010

Applicants wishing to register with The Teaching Council should note that there has been a delay in the processing of Garda Vetting application forms at the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU). The Council has been advised by the GCVU that application forms submitted by The Teaching Council are being prioritised and it is planned that the backlog will be cleared by mid-July. Vetting letters will be issued by the Council as soon as possible thereafter.

Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) of teacher education programmes in Ireland in 2010
Please note that Garda Vetting is a prerequisite for registration. If applicants have not received their Vetting letter from The Teaching Council, they should indicate this on the relevant part of the Application Form for Registration (see next) and return this as soon as possible to the Council.

The Council will issue a specific Application Form for Registration to NQTs upon receipt of their examination results from the providers of teacher education programmes. It is expected that examination results will be transferred to the Council by mid-July.

Important information for students sitting repeat/supplemental examinations or practicals
The examination results for students sitting repeat/supplemental examinations or practicals will not be transferred to The Teaching Council. As a result, these students will not be issued with an Application for Registration as an NQT. Such applicants will be required to undergo the standard registration application process and may download the relevant registration application form by clicking here.

BOM In-Service

Teacher Education Section DES called a series of meetings in 2007 to establish how best to deliver a generic In-career Professional Development Programme for BOM. A Steering committee was set up and all Primary Management Bodies are represented. This Steering Committee is still active.

Agreement was reached on the content of the programme and agreement was also reached that the programme would be managed through the Diocesan Education Secretaries as a network is already in place. The relevant Diocesan Secretary will be in contact with you in due course. This continues to be the case. Many of the Modules have been delivered and plans are in place to roll out the rest of the programme.

Each of the Management Bodies will also deliver a module relevant to their own remit. In the case of NABMSE, this will be Special Education. It is proposed to do this later in the year.

If you require any further information please contact us at nabmse1@eircom.net.

Vetting

The Garda Vetting Unit has been expanded to provide for vetting of all persons working with children and vulnerable adults. A new system is in place whereby Boards of Management have to appoint an Authorised Signatory which may be one person or a two person team. Training will be provided by the Garda Central Vetting Unit during September and resources may be provided by the Department of Education and Science.

We have learned that the Teaching Council has no remit to vet existing teachers. It is proposed to hold consultation meetings with the relevant stakeholders.
