Publication of important discussion paper on school enrolment by DES

The Department of Education and Skills has today published a Discussion Paper on a regulatory framework for school enrolment.

The overall approach taken in this paper is to consider for regulation, only those aspects of enrolment policies and practices where a common or national approach may be desirable and otherwise to provide the maximum discretion to schools. It is proposed that any legislative changes in this area would seek to support the current position whereby decision making resides with the Board of Management.  A key objective for this new framework is to provide a statutory basis that can better ensure that schools’ enrolment policies and procedures are non-discriminatory and are applied fairly in respect of all applicants.

The DES is seeking any views and comments on the options for the regulation of school enrolment to be forwarded to them on or before 28th October 2011. This can be forwarded to enrolmentdiscussionpaper@education.gov.ie  or to:

Enrolment Discussion Paper, Department of Education and Skills, School Governance Section, Cornamaddy, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

The feedback from the publication of this paper will help inform the nature of the new regulatory framework.
